Job Title: Academic Advisor II

Employer:  Metropolitan State University of Denver

Work Location:  Denver, Colorado.  May work remotely within commuting distance two days per week.

Job Duties:  Responsible for advising a caseload of students on degree requirements and providing long-term degree planning. Help students develop educational goals and define a career path, through use of a variety of advising approaches and tools. Work with advising leadership, immediate supervisors, and faculty and/or staff, where appropriate, to understand advising and retention data, and student success implementation strategies. Monitor student progress, making targeted outreach to students to address potential obstacles in retention and graduation. Participate in university-wide and unit-specific advising initiatives. 

Specifically, duties will include:

Provide Advising Services to Students:

  • Conduct advising sessions with students, assist with course selection, scheduling and registration questions using advising-based technology.
  • Utilize knowledge of curriculum to help students with long-term degree planning.
  • Prepare and maintain advising documentation in the current student success/customer management system.
  • Refer students to appropriate University resources.
  • Provide basic information related to career planning, financial literacy, admissions and other applicable information related to student needs.
  • Teach students about electronic advising and registration tools and how to best utilize them for success (e.g., Degree Progress Reports, Student Hub, Student Success Collaborative suite).
  • Participate in New Student Orientation sessions and Registration events.

Monitor Progress and Retention of Assigned Students:

  • Utilize advising-based systems to track and engage assigned students who are at-risk of not being retained (Early Alert).
  • Implement and participate in appropriate student-centered outreach with a lens toward diversity and inclusivity.
  • Implement and participate in retention initiatives with faculty and staff.
  • Access and understand data related to individual caseloads and outreach.

Professional Development:

  • Remain up to date on advising techniques and approaches.
  • Assist in development of advisor professional development opportunities.
  • Serve as a resource to other advisors and/or faculty regarding curriculum in assigned areas.
  • Assist other advisors and/or faculty in appropriate use of technology resources.
  • Develop and maintain professional learning networks with internal and external stakeholders, assisting in problem solving to support student success.

Utilize computer-based student information systems including PeopleSoft, CampusVue, Internet Native Banner, Self Service Banner, Student Hub, Navigate 360, Degree Progress Reports, Student Success Collaborative suite, and other tools, skills, technologies, and standards in carrying out assigned duties.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Primary Education Requirement: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or a closely related field.

Other Special Skills or Requirements: Position also requires working knowledge (6 months’ work experience or 1 post-secondary course) using computer-based student information systems including Internet Native Banner, Self Service Banner, Student Hub, Navigate 360, and Degree Progress Reports. Demonstrated ability to work with college/university student population in any of the following roles: advising, mentoring, or orientation. Demonstrated ability to work with and/or be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population and relate effectively to a diverse university community (students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents).

May work remotely within commuting distance two days per week.
